What people use it for
I bring on ten to fifteen contractors a month and used to chase every one of them for a legible form. Now I send this link in the offer email and the signed PDF comes back the same day.
Half our vendors used to send forms as phone photos that finance refused to file. Pointing them here fixed it. The layout matches the official document and nothing gets cut off when it downloads.
What sold me is that the data isn't stored anywhere and the file downloads straight to the signer's machine. I can ask a client to complete one without worrying about where their details end up.
January used to mean tracking down paperwork from every subcontractor. This year I sent one link to the whole roster and had every form back inside a week.
New clients always want a fresh copy and I never have last year's handy. Filling it out here is faster than digging up the PDF, and the fields space themselves so I stop transposing digits.
I keep this bookmarked for the client who calls saying they need a form right now. I walk them through it on the phone in a couple of minutes — open, type, sign, download.

1099-NEC Form FAQs
Clear up any doubts you may have about filing your 1099-NEC form by reviewing the answers to frequently asked questions below.
What is a 1099-NEC used for?
Form 1099-NEC tells the IRS what you paid contractors and other nonemployees during the year. File one copy with the IRS and send another to the person you paid.
How do I file and submit Form 1099-NEC?
Fill in our 1099-NEC template with MergedPDF, then get it to the IRS one of two ways: e-file through an authorized system or mail it. Mailing means you also need Form 1096 and an official scannable Copy A.
What is the difference between Form 1099-NEC and Form 1099-MISC?
The 1099-NEC is for nonemployee compensation, meaning the money you pay contractors for their work. The 1099-MISC covers the rest: rent, prizes, certain medical payments, and gross proceeds paid to attorneys.
Who is required to receive or issue a Form 1099-NEC?
You issue one if you're a business, nonprofit, or government agency paying qualifying nonemployee compensation. Your contractor then receives it and uses it on their own return.
What is the filing deadline for Form 1099-NEC?
January 31 is generally the date of the deadline, which is the same date for the IRS copy and your contractor's copy. If it lands on a weekend or legal holiday, you get until the next business day.
Where do I report Form 1099-NEC income on my tax return?
If you are self-employed, use Schedule C for the income and Schedule SE for the self-employment tax. If your business is set up differently, the income may belong somewhere else on your return.
How much tax do I owe on 1099-NEC income?
There's no fixed figure as it moves with your net profit, deductions, total income, and bracket. Expect income tax plus self-employment tax, which runs about 15.3% of net earnings before any limits change the math.
What type of income is reported on Form 1099-NEC?
Pay for services from someone who isn't on your payroll. Think freelancers, consultants, independent contractors, and certain attorneys.
How do I correct an error on a filed Form 1099-NEC?
Fill out a fresh 1099-NEC, tick the "CORRECTED" box, and send it in through the IRS correction procedure that fits your mistake. Your contractor needs the updated copy too, and MergedPDF can prepare the corrected form for you.
Do I need to issue a 1099-NEC to an LLC, S Corp, or C Corp?
Look at the Form W-9 given to you, as the tax classification on it decides this. Partnerships and disregarded LLCs: report the payments. Corporations usually skip it unless you're dealing with attorney payments or backup withholding.
What is Box 1 Nonemployee Compensation on Form 1099-NEC?
The total you paid that nonemployee over the year. One thing to watch: on the revised December 2026 form, the number goes in Box 1a instead.
What is the difference between a W-2 and Form 1099-NEC?
A W-2 is for employees, including their wages and the payroll taxes you withheld. A 1099-NEC is for contractors and other nonemployees who work out and pay their own taxes.
Do nonprofits receive or issue Form 1099-NEC?
Both, potentially. Pay an independent contractor, and you may need to issue one. Pay a tax-exempt organization, and there's generally nothing to report. The payment and the recipient's classification settle it.
Should reimbursed expenses be included in Form 1099-NEC?
It depends on how you handle them. Roll reimbursements into a contractor's pay, and they're likely reportable; substantiate them properly, and you may be able to leave them out. Check the IRS instructions or call your tax pro.
Which copies of Form 1099-NEC go to the IRS, recipient, and state?
Copy A goes to the IRS. Copy B goes to your contractor, and so does Copy 2, which is for their state return. Copy 1 goes to your state tax department if it wants one. Copy C stays in your files.
Do I need to file Form 1099-NEC with the state tax agency?
Depends on the state. Some want their own filing; others pick up the information through a filing program instead. Check your state and your contractor's before you send anything.
What is backup withholding on Form 1099-NEC?
It's federal income tax you hold back instead of paying it out. Triggers: a wrong TIN, no TIN at all, or a notice from the IRS. Whatever you withhold goes in Box 4.
How do businesses use Form W-9 to issue Form 1099-NEC?
Get a W-9 from your contractor before you pay them. It hands you their legal name, address, tax classification, and TIN. The exact fields you'll fill in on the 1099-NEC with MergedPDF.
What is the Payer's TIN and Recipient's TIN on Form 1099-NEC?
One identifies you as the business issuing the form; the other identifies the contractor you paid. Either can be an EIN, an SSN, or another number the IRS issues.
What are the IRS penalties for filing or issuing Form 1099-NEC late?
The penalties stack, meaning one set for the IRS filing and another for the recipient's statement. On returns due in 2026, count on $60 to $340 per return, or $680 if the IRS calls it intentional disregard. The figures shift a little each year.
Can I email Form 1099-NEC directly to an independent contractor?
Yes, with the recipient's consent and the IRS electronic-delivery rules met. Send it securely once it's finished in MergedPDF, as the form carries their TIN.
Do I need to issue a Form 1099-NEC if I paid a contractor using PayPal, Venmo, or a credit card?
Usually not. The payment processor reports those on Form 1099-K instead, so the payment is already covered. The exception is when the platform simply passed along a direct payment between you and your contractor.
Do I need to file Form 1096 when e-filing Form 1099-NEC?
It’s not necessary when you e-file, as Form 1096 is a cover sheet for paper returns only.
What is IRS TIN Matching and why should I use it before submitting Form 1099-NEC?
It's an IRS service that checks your contractor's name and TIN against IRS records. Run it before you file to avoid mismatch notices, backup withholding issues, and penalties.
Do I need to issue Form 1099-NEC to a foreign contractor living outside the United States?
Usually it’s not necessary to file, as that payment belongs on Form 1042-S. You may also owe withholding, depending on where the work happened and whether a tax treaty applies.
Can I get an extension of time to file Form 1099-NEC with the IRS?
Not automatically. File Form 8809 on paper, and you can get one 30-day extension, as long as you meet an approved criterion. Your deadline for the contractor's copy stays where it is.
Can a business issue both a Form 1099-NEC and a Form 1099-MISC to the same person in the same tax year?
Yes, when the payments are different types. Hire someone for consulting and rent space from them, and you'd send a 1099-NEC for the work and a 1099-MISC for the rent.
